Embarking on therapy can feel both exciting and uncertain. Many people wonder how long therapy will take or how many sessions they might need. The truth is, there’s no universal answer. Therapy is as individual as the people who seek it, much like asking, "How long is a piece of string?"

My Approach to Therapy Duration

In my practice, I offer long-term therapy, typically lasting 6 or 12 months, with the option to extend if needed. When a client isn’t sure about committing to a longer duration, I suggest starting with an initial block of six sessions. This provides an opportunity to evaluate the fit and adjust as we go. This approach offers the time and space needed to build a strong therapeutic relationship and work with deeper patterns that cannot be rushed.

The Benefits of Long-Term Therapy

1. Addressing Complex Issues Long-term therapy allows for a thorough exploration of persistent challenges, whether they stem from trauma, ongoing negative thought patterns, or deeply ingrained behaviours. It’s particularly beneficial for issues that touch multiple areas of life, such as relationships, career, or health. The extended timeframe helps uncover how past experiences influence current emotions and behaviours, creating space for deep healing. Clients can move beyond surface-level solutions to untangle complex issues.

2. Building Self-Awareness and Coping Skills Long-term therapy fosters greater self-awareness and equips you with tools to navigate life’s challenges. Many clients discover that their difficulties are rooted in early childhood experiences, which shape their expectations of others and influence how they respond to emotional triggers. Through therapy, clients learn to recognise trauma cues and establish healthier coping mechanisms.

This process not only enhances self-understanding but also strengthens relationships—both with yourself and others—by fostering a deeper connection to your emotional world.

3. Creating Lasting Change Through ongoing therapy, clients often experience significant personal growth. Long-term support encourages self-discovery, resilience, and the ability to handle challenges more effectively. It isn’t just for trauma survivors; anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of themselves and improve their quality of life can benefit.

Feedback from Long-Term Clients

Clients often share how life-changing this work can be. Many report feeling more grounded, self-aware, and equipped to manage relationships and stress. The extended time allows for incremental progress and deeper healing, creating a ripple effect in their personal and professional lives.

Whether you're working through unresolved trauma or simply seeking to understand yourself better, long-term therapy offers a pathway to meaningful and lasting transformation.
