Anxiety & Emotional Overwhelm
Understanding Anxiety
Anxiety can affect people in many different ways. At times, it may feel like constant overthinking, emotional overwhelm, panic, racing thoughts, difficulty relaxing, or a sense that something bad might happen, even when there is no immediate danger.
For some, anxiety may feel present in the background most days. For others, it may become more noticeable during periods of stress, relationship difficulties, uncertainty, life transitions, or emotional overwhelm.
While anxiety is a natural human response designed to help protect us from danger, it can become exhausting when the nervous system remains in a prolonged state of alertness.
How Anxiety Can Feel
Anxiety may affect both the mind and body. You may notice experiences such as:
-
Racing or intrusive thoughts
-
Constant worry or overthinking
-
Difficulty relaxing or switching off
-
Feeling emotionally overwhelmed
-
Panic attacks or sudden feelings of fear
-
Irritability or emotional sensitivity
-
Difficulty sleeping or resting
-
Feeling disconnected or emotionally shut down
-
Physical symptoms such as tension, headaches, shaking, nausea, or a racing heart
-
Avoiding situations that feel emotionally uncomfortable or unsafe
Anxiety, Relationships & Emotional Safety
Sometimes anxiety is not only connected to present situations, but also to past experiences, emotional wounds, trauma, attachment difficulties, or environments where safety, reassurance, or emotional support felt inconsistent.
At times, anxiety can develop from living in a prolonged state of stress or emotional uncertainty, leaving the nervous system feeling constantly alert or prepared for danger.
Therapy can help create space to better understand the emotional patterns underneath anxiety, rather than simply trying to “get rid” of the feeling itself.
